POWER YOGA FAQ

What is Power Yoga?
Power Yoga is a style of yoga focused mainly on developing strength and flexibility. It began gaining popularity in the 1990's as yoga teachers looked for ways to make yoga more accessible to western students. Power Yoga classes consist of intense, flowing yoga poses that appeal to those looking to get fit and for a good workout. Go to our Power Flow page to see pictures of some of the poses covered in class.

I've never done Power Yoga and am not very flexible. Is that a problem?

The great thing about Power Yoga is each person is free to develop their own individual practice. Every pose taught in class can be modified to your own physical ability. If the pose calls for touching your toes and you can't, then you go to your shins or your knees - the important part is that you are challenging your edge, wherever that edge is.

It's been a while since I've worked out. Can I do Power Yoga?

You should consult with a physician before undertaking a new workout regiment if you have any concerns. It is important to note that each person in class is developing their own unique yoga practice. If you are new to yoga, start out with our Power Basics yoga class. If at any time during the practice you need to take a break, simply drop out of the pose, regroup, and catch your breath. As your conditioning improves you will become more comfortable with your ability to do the postures. Magic will happen if you stick to it and challenge your physical and mental edges.

What do I need to take a yoga class?

You will need a yoga mat. You may also want to bring a towel. You can read about yoga class etiquette on our Class Info page.

I don't have a yoga mat. Can I rent or buy one?

Sure, you can rent a yoga mat for a $1. We also sell Manduka and Jade premium yoga mats in the studio as well as mat towels that you can lay over your mat to help absorb sweat and provide additional traction for your hands and feet.

What should I wear to class?

Clothes you can move comfortably in, like short, t-shirts, tank tops, etc. Keep in mind that the studio is heated to 90 degrees before each class. Be prepared to sweat.

Are your yoga classes hot classes?

Yes, heat is ideal for shaping and stretching muscles. Body movements are much more fluid in a heated studio, plus the heat makes you sweat. Through sweating, your body releases toxins and excess fluids, lessening the burden on your kidneys and liver, giving your skin gets the workout it needs as well.

How hot does your studio get?

We heat our studio to 90 F. This is hot enough to get the sweat flowing and the muscles loose, but not so hot that the heat becomes distracting.

I'm a guy. Can I do Power Yoga?

Yes. Because of the physical nature of Power Yoga, many guys love to practice this style. Our Power Basics class is a great place to start for guys who have never done yoga.

MatSanaMATSANA FAQ

How much does it cost to use the Matsana?
$1 per mat.

Will Matsana kill mat-odor?
Yes. Mat odors are caused by pungent smelling, sulfur compounds in the waste excreted by bacteria. When you rid the mat of the bacteria excreting the waste, you also get rid of the smell. Germicidal UV-C light requires line-of-sight to be effective, so if your mat has not been cleaned for some time, it is possible for target organisms to be shielded by layers of crud. For Matsana to be most effective in maintaining your mat in a fresh condition, it may be necessary to first give a good cleaning to heavily soiled or neglected mats.

Does Matsana leave anything on my mat?
No. Unlike sprays, wipes, or oils, that sometimes use toxic chemicals, bleach or other active liquids, Matsana is a dry process and leaves no residue. And unlike some mats with undisclosed, embedded germicidal agents, you may place your face on your Matsana – sanitized mat with absolute confidence and peace of mind.

Do UV-C wands do the same thing as Matsana?
No. UV-C wands, by design, are to be used by untrained consumers in uncontrolled environments, and, for safety, the power of the lamps is severely limited. Waving around an underpowered hand-held device is no match for the controlled process and sheer power of Matsana. Your mat passes through Matsana’s enclosed, high-intensity, UV-C light chamber at a regulated rate of exposure and ensures that every square inch of your mat, on both sides, receives a powerful and effective dose of germicidal UV-C light.

Is the Matsana light harmful to me?
No. The radiant energy that does the work in Matsana is contained, out of sight, in the light chamber of the machine. The thin line of visible light when one looks directly down at the top of the machine (Don’t!) is reflected light and is extremely low energy. Measured on a radiometer, the light energy from the thin line registers about the same as indirect daylight lighting coming from windows.

How “Green” is Matsana?
Very. Matsana is made entirely in the US, primarily from aluminum, the most plentiful metal in the earth’s crust. Aluminum is also very easy to recycle and commands high prices from aluminum producers, ensuring that little, if any, finds its way to landfills. The plastic front cover is made from ABS and the arm from stainless steel, both, again, sought after and easily recycled materials. The lamps are recycled by the same facilities that recycle fluorescent lamps. Matsana is designed and built for the long haul and once delivered to a studio, ends the cycle of diesel-powered, greenhouse gas-producing, shipping and restocking of heavy, liquid, mat cleaning agents. It also helps to halt the endless production and disposal of plastic bottles for those liquids and the disposable wipes and their packaging that end up in landfills.
